d.studio week 11: working towards the storyboard

It’s hard to believe that we have only two more sessions of the d.studio.  This week we heard from our AMS/Pulse Energy group.  They are working with the company Pulse Energy  http://www.pulseenergy.com/ — a young firm that is making great inroads into the area of energy management in buildings.  Our question is:  how do we make people who inhabit buildings more aware of the energy they consume?

It is tough because we don’t “see” and “feel” energy easily.  We take energy for granted.  So the team has been exploring ideas (using the catering group at the AMS — the student run organization on campus) about how to make our energy choices more explicit?  For example, when we choose one menu item over another — there are some energy choices we are making.   So the team is working with Pulse and the AMS to find some ways to us more energy aware.  The idea is to integrate some of the these ideas into the new Student Union building that is being planned/designed right now.

As we head into the last week before our presentations on Wednesday Dec 1 from 4-6pm at the Museum of Vancouver, we talked a bit about the interim deliverable for next week:  the storyboard.

This is such a great tool for getting ones thoughts and messages organized.  Here are some examples that we showed the students so they could get the idea:

From Google Images — now can’t find them to assign credits.  Apologies.

We’ll be looking at all the team’s storyboards next week to give them some good guidance as they prepare their presentations for December 1.

I think that UBC is pretty great in hianvg variety of opportunities. You could continue to develop a skill or knowledge base by pursuing involvement that is familiar and an evolution from past experiences. Or you could venture out into something entirely brand new, finding inspiration or new ideas. I strongly encourage all our new students to talk with current or as Chad calls them or seasoned students. With so much happening on campus, you have to keep your eyes and ears open, ask those who have been here and found their niche, what they loved, and why you never know what you might find!
