Reflection 2: Interview and Canvas Reflection

Project 3 is the most engaging project that I ever had in Sauder.  I enjoyed it alot mainly due to two things:

First, one of the best parts of this project is the fact that this project extends beyond classrooms to current real world businesses that is growing every minute as I am typing this essay.  This project gave us an opportunity to apply theories that we have discussed and practiced in class to the real business with no right or wrong answers and letter grade does not justify our performance.

Second, this project gave us an opportunity to take on the role of a “consultant” to one of the start-up firms.  Our group was more surprised when we later found out that Lindsey, CEO that we were interviewing, is an ex-consultant himself.  First thing that came to my mind was “God, how am I going to be a good consultant to an ex-consultant?”  It was our first time using the business canvas and fortunately, so was Lindsey.  We find the canvas useful to as it indentifies key items regarding the business itself.  However, I find it restrictive, particularly omitting the external environment of the business.   One of the key takeaways that we learned from Lindsey was that we should not restrict ourselves with one given analysis tool, a good consultant has many best tools at his disposal but deliver single tailor made tool that encompasses all key areas of current businesses and its problems. It was a very interesting experience as we get to learn more about Lindsey and Placeling.

I think that this kind of project provides one of the most crucial learning environments that every business school students should at least have a chance to experience before they graduate as there are many real life lessons that students could take away from.  D.Studio has done a great job in integrating this project in the class and I feel privileged to be part of it.  However, I think that this program should expand in size allowing other students who weren’t able to register or have not know about this program to take part in this great learning experience as well.
