The students in the d.studio never cease to amaze me. I feel energized by their presence. Week 11 was going to be a “studio-time” for their projects but an opportunity arose for them to help the Sauder Business School in its process of imagining a revised Bachelor of Commerce Program. The committee working on this process developed a number of scenarios for going forward — and it seemed an ideal opportunity to ask the B.Comm students in the studio to have a go at prototyping a “piece” of these scenarios.
Was wondering how easy it would be for them to launch into a prototyping session. Well — I should not have worried. They were in it in a flash. And in a mere 90 minutes had come up with some ideas and insights that I think are going to be incredibly useful to the Committee.
One of the students, Harrison, had requested to be involved in the B.Comm process. So Denise Withers (Design Strategist at Sauder) thought that it would be useful for him to teach a little module to his classmates on a “service journey”. Well — I learned a lot from Harrison’s presentation. He is a great teacher (and we know he coaches hockey so gets a lot of practice) and he brought us all through a very clear explanation of a service journey. It was the perfect entree into thinking about the experience of the B.Comm student at Sauder — whether it might be the first year experience, the global experience or the idea of a “mixed year cohort”.
Also a good lesson around how valuable it is to have to “teach” something to somebody else. These mini-assignments that the students are taking on could be quite interesting. More on that in future blogs.
