Design Thinking: Outside of the d.studio

Hi guys,

As some of you touched on, people always ask say, “Whoa, that classroom look cool! What do you do?”
There is no exact or obvious answer, because we- d.studio students- do a lot of different activities in and outside of the classroom. After listing out activities such as listening to entrepreneurs, working with ClimateSmart, and designing a showcase for the Open House the next question is “How can that be applied to the business world?”

Recently, I’ve discovered multiple uses of the “business canvas”, diagrams, flow charts, and visual art that we learn at the d.studio. However, I want to focus on its perfect fit in analyzing business cases. I recently participated in Premiere32 Case Competition as well as the Acumen Case Competition and in both occasions our team used a whiteboard/ large white sheet of paper to plot out the business canvas as well as our thought process. Outlining our analyses in such a design- format was an quick and efficient method to spot any issues and make connections within a case. Also, it was a lot easier for everyone to participate. Another key advantage was creating our powerpoint through the use of the canvas

In both events our team was commended by the judges for thoroughly presenting our thought- process, and having a logical sequence that was easy to understand (which happens to be a major factor on the score sheet). I believe I should give credit to our group “design- thinking” and I definitely believe what we are learning at the d.studio can benefit businesses right from the spark of a new idea to the end of implementing a project.

Please comment on how you applied what we learn at the d.studio outside!
