About the course

Are you ready to make a difference in the world? Are you open to new and alternative ways of learning? Be among the first undergraduate students at Sauder to experience an entirely new format of class: a design studio.

As the business environment becomes more unpredictable, organizations will demand leaders who are capable of making the most of the opportunity. Leadership will increasingly mean being comfortable managing and motivating diverse teams of creative people. Truly innovative, new technologies and processes will be needed to address the world’s problems. The Sustainable Business by Design Studio will challenge teams of students to deliver real-world solutions that create economic, social, and environmental value.

This pilot course provides students with the skills to conduct design thinking. Design thinking tools and processes, used for decades in industry and manufacturing, offer proven, alternative approaches for managing today’s most challenging business problems. Companies like Accenture, Four Seasons, and GE are using design thinking to make game changing plays in their industries. Part creative ideation, part critical analysis, and part innovative thinking for new ways of using existing information and systems, design thinking will become an essential tool for doing business better.

Resources: No textbook required but a Studio Workbook will be made available to each student. A laptop is essential equipment for the Studio course. Maximum class size is 24 students.
